What is a RT-PCR Test?

• RT-PCR stands for Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction. It is a process used to detect a virus.
• A RT-PCR test for COVID-19 is a test used to diagnose people who are currently infected with SARS-CoV-2, which is the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.
• The RT-PCR test is the “gold standard” test (99% accuracy) for diagnosing COVID-19 because it is the most accurate and reliable test.

What do COVID-19 RT-PCR Test Results mean?

• A positive PCR test result means that it is very likely that you have COVID-19.
• A negative PCR test result means you probably did not have COVID-19 at the time you took your test. However, it is possible to be infected with SARS-CoV-2 but not have enough virus in your body to be detected by the test.
• Even if you tested negative, you could become infected in the future, so it is important to follow guidelines for physical distancing, use of face mask and regular hand-washing to avoid potential infection.

Why take a COVID-19 RT-PCR Test if I am feeling OK?

• Many countries and airlines now require travellers to provide a negative PCR test result as a condition for you to board your plane and/or enter the country.
• If you have been exposed to people who have symptoms or have tested positive, you may want to be tested, even if you do not show any symptoms.
